Inside Out 2 Surpasses Frozen 2's Box Office Record

The success of Inside Out 2 was not exactly unexpected. But the scale of that success has caught some people unaware- quite possibly including Disney and Pixar. The film's massive popularity comes in the wake of a run of a bad luck for the studio that saw three films in a row switched ti Disney Plus and Lightyear flopping. Last year's Elemental was something of a return to form, but with Inside Out 2 it's fair to say that Pixar are back in a big way.

After a record breaking opening, the sequel has gone on to become the fastest animated film to reach one billion worldwide. It's also the first film to break a billion since last year's Barbie. On over six weeks on release the film has gone on to to take $601 million domestically and $861 million internationally, for a total of $1.46 billion. This suprasses the $1.45 billion raked in by Frozen 2, which Disney says makes it the most successful animated film of all time.

Disney is lying, however (or at the least wrong) because the highest grossing animated film of all time remains the 2019 remake of The Lion King, which took in a massive $1.65 billion. For reasons known only to itself (probably some kind on marketing nonsense) Disney insists the film is 'live-action', despite the fact it was entirely created within computers (save for one shot).

Still, the second highrest grossing animated film of all time is an impressive achievement and it's brilliant to see Pixar back on form. And for it to be done with such a good film too, is just a bonus.

Inside Out 2 has overtaken Barbie to become the 13th highest grossing film of all time worldwside (15th domestically). It's also the highest grossing film of 2024 so far.

The film's nearest competition is from Despicable Me 4, which saw the franchise become the first animated series in history to surpassing 5 billion at the box office. The fourth film opened strong and has gone on to take more than $630 million worlwide. Only time will tell if it has the legs to join the billion club once again.
