Trailer Exclusive: 'Ada'

Animation festivals- and film festivals in general- tend to be associated with screening feature films. But many of them also screen shorts, commissioned films and TV. Dances With Films, a LA-based general film festival has announced its program, which includes  232 films, made up of 38 narrative features, 17 documentary features, 25 television and streaming pilots, and 152 short films. Among the pilots this year is Ada, which is making its debut on the festival circuit.

The series is produced by Should We Studio, and written and directed by Elizabeth Cox, Should We Studio founder and former Senior Editorial Producer at TED-Ed. It features the stylings of animation director Kirill Yeretsky, whose credits include Our Cartoon President. The Bit Player, With Drawn Arms and Frank Oz's In & Of Itself.

It features the voices of Rachel Rial (Human Resources, Mythic Heroes) Jack Cutmore-Scott (Oppenheimer, Dunkirk), Aric Floyd (Doors, Underdogs), Maggie Pistner,  Aliya Amor and Ashlei Stevens.

In the series we meet Ada, who struggles to keep two worlds separate: her daily life as a library assistant, and her imagination, where she explores how different transformative technologies could shape the future. She drags people from the real world along for the ride, including her boss, her grandmother and an unsuspecting visitor to the library.

The series runs for five episodes, and explores the ethical and social implications of new technologies. The animation style varies, with different techniques used to separate Ada's futures with her present. It's got a visually pleasing style to go with its intriguing premise.

We don't know quite when the full series will be released, or on what platforms/where you might be able to see it. But in the meantime, you can catch it at festivals, starting with ,Dances With Films, which will run from June 20-30 at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres.

We've got an exclusive first look at the trailer, which you can check out below.
