Ottawa International Animation Festival Reveals Competing Series

The Ottawa International Animation Festival is among the largest and longest established events of its kind. The festival is continuing to reveal its selection for the 2024 festival. Earlier this week it revealed its Young Audience Selection.  Now it follows up with its animated series selection, showcasing the best animation made for television or streaming.

In stark contrast with Annecy, which frequently chooses well known series, OIAF deliberately targets "under the radar" series. These are series that are not as widely known or are not as mainstream. As such, it is likely you'll only recognise one- Scavenger's Reign, which streams on Max and Netflix.

Animated Series In Competition

Bad Bad Belgium (dirs. Jasper Declercq, Wouter Medaer and Jonas Wellens, Belgium)
In the Know 'Portrait of a Safety Rep on Fire' (dirs. Zach Woods and Brandon Gardner, United States)
Let's Play Pretend! (dir. Sam Lane, United States)
Little Edy 'Episode 3' (dir. Felipe Di Poi, United States)
Scavenger's Reign 'The Signal' (dirs. Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner, United States)
가츄캐츄 (Gotchu Catchu) (dirs. Taesik Shin and Kyuri Park, Republic of Korea)

“Each year, we strive to find under-the-radar series that OIAF audiences might not be familiar with. We don’t just look abroad, but also in alternative streaming sources,” says OIAF Artistic Director Chris Robinson.”This year’s crop features sci-fi, office comedy, historical works, and absurdist works that the OIAF has become known for uncovering.”

At the time of selection, the line-up includes several premieres. Gotchu Catchu, a South Korean series set in a world where all women are cats will have its international premiere at OIAF. In the Know 'Portrait of a Safety Rep on Fire' from Zach Woods and Brandon Gardner, will have its Canadian premiere, and true crime documentary Big Bad Belgium will have its North American Premiere at the festival.

The Ottawa International Animation Festival will run this year from September 25- September 29. More information can be found on the festival website.
