Inside Out 2 Becomes Top Grossing Film of 2024

You don't need to be an expert in the business in show business to know that Hollywood is in trouble. For the past couple of years studios have put out flop after flop- often with films that were seen as surefire hits. And Disney has certainly not been immune, with bombs releasing from all the studios under the Disney umbrella- Dinsey, Marvel and Pixar. But there have been a few bright spots among the doom and gloom, Last year it was The Super Mario Bros. Movie. And this year its Inside Out 2.

Kelsey Mann's sequel opened to a massive $155 million opening week domestically. On top of which it took $140 million internationally. This is the biggest opening of the year, outpacing Dune Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. It's also the first film since Barbie to open north of $100 million, and the fourth best opening for a PG rated film. It's the second biggest animated opening of all time, and the second biggest in Pixar's history- in both cases behind Incredibles 2.

Internationally, it was the biggest opening of all time (at current exchange rates) surpassing Frozen 2. It has also scored the best opening in several countries worldwide, or in the top five. It also gave IMAX their biggest opening (excluding China) with $3.5 million internationally and $14.5 in the US (their fourth biggest opening).

In the UK and Ireland it opened to a sizable £11.3 million ($14.3 million), taking 71% of the total box-office, and giving the film the biggest opening since Barbie.

Even more impressively, the film managed to take $100 million in its second week on release. This is the seventh best second weekend in box office history, and the best for an animated film. The film has now grossed $355 million in North America and $724 million worldwide. It took only eight days in cinemas for it to overtake Dune Part Two and become the biggest grossing film of the year so far.

It's anticipated that the film will probably join the prestigious billion-dollar grosser club before too long. But how high can it go? It pretty much has the family market to itself for now, but has some competition fast approaching in the form of Despicable Me 4. Pixar's emotional blockbuster might have fought off all rivals so far, but can it fight off the mighty minions? We'll know soon enough.
