MeTV Launching 'MeTV Toons' Classic Cartoon Channel
The way many of us consume TV has changed dramatically over the past few years. But it's easy to forget that millions of people still consume television the old-fashioned way. Still, it feels contrary to current trends for someone to launch a traditional network in the year 2024. MeTV, a broadcast network dedicated to classic TV has announced plans to launch a new animation focussed spin-off MeTV Toons.
According to owner Weigel Broadcasting Co. the new 24-hour nationwide network will be dedicated to classic animation "from Hollywood-era shorts to made-for-television favourites." The network is being launched by Weigel in partnership with Warner Bros Discovery. This gives the network access to the studio's archive and lets them air shorts and shows featuring characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry, George Jetson, Top Cat, Yogi Bear, Popeye, Johnny Quest and Fred Flintstone.
The network's launch follows the success of MeTV's daily Toon In With Me program. Weigel boast that the network is the only one in America that is dedicated to classic animation.Cartoon Network's sister channel Boomerang also airs more recent animated shows. Alongside the programming from WBD, MeTV Toons will also air content from other distributors. Titles include Rocky and Bullwinkle, Woody Woodpecker, Casper, Betty Boop and Speed Racer.
“We are honoured to work with the amazing team at Warner Bros. Discovery and others on this network and bring together a truly incredible collection of the world’s best known and most loved classic cartoons, creating a new destination for everyone to discover or rediscover the sheer joy of watching cartoons on TV,” said Weigel vice chairman Neal Sabin. “MeTV Toons will be dedicated 24/7 to showcasing the biggest names and most beloved classic cartoons and animated characters. Everyone has a favorite cartoon; it is a universally loved art form. We are thrilled to bring those smiles and memories back to TV with MeTV Toons.”
In addition, there will be original programming, that will be produced by renowned animation historian Jerry Beck and related to the MeTV Toons library. It's also been announced that voice actor Bob Bergen- who has voiced Porky Pig, Marvin The Martian, Tweety Bird and others will be the network's continuity announcer.
MeTV Toons will be a multiple platform offering, with availability over-the-air television, traditional and virtual operators. There will also be a complementary offering for ad-supported streaming services. Basically, if your operator already carries the main MeTV channel, you should get the new channel when it arrives.
MeTV Toons will launch on June 25. Find out more about MeTV via their website.
