A Greyhound Of A Girl Comes To UK & Irish Cinemas This June
Not every animated feature can be a Disney or Pixar film. But even the realm of lower-budget, smaller films can throw up some real gems. Could that be the case in A Greyhound of A Girl, coming to UK and Irish cinemas this June? It certainly has the pedigree.
A Greyhound of A Girl is a 2D animated film that was co-produced by seven European countries: Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom. It was produced by Jam Media, Jam Media, Rija Films, Amrion Production, Fish Blowing Bubbles, Paul Thiltges Distributions, and Aliante. It will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on June 28, 2024 by Dazzler Media.
The film is the first animation to be based upon the work of Irish writer Roddy Doyle. The story follows four generations of women living in contemporary Ireland. Eleven-year-old Mary has a passion for cooking and dreams of becoming a great chef. Her beloved grandmother encourages her to chase her dream. When unexpected news causes the four generations to take a trip together they gain the opportunity to reconnect and learn more about each other.
Be wary though, this may be a children's film but we suspect that the trailer is hinting towards some family tragedy along the way. But then again, a story from Roddy Doyle could be expected to have something of an edge.
The voice cast includes BAFTA-winner Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters, Catastrophe), Oscar-nominee Brendan Gleeson (Song Of The Sea, In Bruges), Charlene McKenna (Bloodlands, Ripper Street) and Rosaleen Linehan (The Personal History of David Copperfield, The Matchmaker). The film is written and directed by Italian filmmaker Enzo D'Alo. Dave Ingham is co-writer.
The film has been screened at several festivals to some acclaim. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale) in 2023, and went on to screen at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival and Chicago International Children’s Festival. It has been nominated for several awards including Best Film at Berlinale and Best Animation at Shanghai International Film Festival, Göteborg Film Festival, and The European Film Awards.
