The House's Paloma Baeza Completes New Short Film 'Three Hares'
British actress-turned-film-maker Paloma Baeza has just completed work on her latest short film, Three Hares. The new film from the BAFTA-winning animator (Poles Apart, Netflix's The House) is a hand-drawn short with an ecological focus. Baeza adapted and directed the short based on an original story by the acclaimed author and editor-in-chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Hanya Yanagihara.
Three Hares portrays a creation myth and the mystical origin story of three ancient hares and segways into an environmental tale about three sisters who must remind mankind to respect the Earth in order to protect their future.
Oscar and BAFTA-nominated Irish actress and musician Jessie Buckley provides the narration. The original score is provided by two-time Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) and co-composer Juan Luqui (The Last of Us).
The film's all-female production team is led by Amy Nauiokas and Rebecca Choi at Archer Gray, Ruth Fielding, Camilla Deakin and Vanessa Wheeler at Lupus Films (Kensuke's Kingdom, Ethel and Ernest) and Beth Hutchens, the Founder and Creative Director of jewellery company, FoundRae.
Award-winning animation director Neil BoyleBoyle (Kensuke’s Kingdom, The Last Belle) , art directors Sharon Liu (The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Nina Simone: Colour is a Beautiful Thing) and Aaron Lampert (Isle of Dogs, The Lost Weekend: A Love Story) led a small team of artists and animators at Lupus Films' studio in London.
Baeza says "Making this film felt like carving a rare and delicate gem. Our exceptionally talented team of committed animators and designers created a rich visual canvas, elevated beyond our expectations by Gustavo and Juan’s immersive, magical score, and the enigmatic warmth of Jessie’s voice. It has been an inspiring collaboration, all in service of delivering an urgent message we firmly believe in."
It's intriguing because Ms. Baeza has primarily worked in the stop-motion medium up until now. What inspired the switch? Whatever the reason, she has picked perfect partners as Lupus Films are experts in 2D animation.
Three Hares is an Archer Gray production in association with Lupus Films. No release date has been announced for the short film, although we would imagine it will screen in time for awards consideration for the Oscars and BAFTAs next year.
