'Batman Beyond' Animated Movie Concept Art Released
Sometimes we're lucky enough to get to see art from films or series that never made it through production. We get a window on what might have been. Even rarer is the chance to see material from projects that never even made it past the pitch stage.
Production designer Yuhki Demers (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Across The Spider-Verse, My Dad The Bounty Hunter) has taken the unusual step of releasing concept art (via Twitter) for the project that he pitched with Patrick Harpin. "5 months ago Patrick Harpin walked into [Warner Bros] and [DC] and pitched a Batman Beyond Animated Feature" he explained. "Before we pitched, they warned us "there is absolutely no way we can do a Beyond movie", but they loved our enthusiasm. We pitched the outline for the entire film, and what started as a 'never' turned into a 'maybe'."
"In the time since, we've been pitching our way up the company hoping to get to [DC Boss] James Gunn. But for now, here's a taste of what we've been cooking."
Demers has taken to social media in the hope of drumming up a fan reaction and to hopefully prove to the bigwigs at Warners that there is an appetite for the movie. The concept art has certainly generated a lot of excitement and has drawn comparisons with the Spider-Verse movies.
Batman Beyond was an original DC animated series that aired from 1999-2001. Created by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett it was a futuristic series set in the city of Neo-Gotham. Teenager Terry McGinnis takes up the mantle of Batman under the mentorship of a 70-something Bruce Wayne. The series was a sequel to the classic Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures. The series also got a spin-off movie Batman Beyond: The Return Of The Joker.
How likely it is that a fan campaign could get the movie greenlit remains to be seen. Warner Bros Discovery seems less open to such things post Snyder-Cut, and they certainly don't seem to be listening to them about Coyote Vs Acme.
Still, if the concept has you excited it won't do any harm to spread the post far and wide. You can find the original tweet here
