Netflix and Wit Studio Announce New 'One Piece' Anime

Remakes and reboots are ten a penny these days, in animation as much as any other TV and film. It's pretty unusual for a franchise to get two remakes while the original show is still running. But that's what's happening to One Piece. The globally popular swashbuckling anime was remade as Netflix and Tomorrow Studio's well-received live-action series. Now it's been announced that the saga is getting a second anime series, called The One Piece.

The new series is being produced for Netflix and is being animated by the renowned Wit Studio (Spy X Family, Vinland Saga, Attack On Titan). The series will adapt the manga starting from the East Blue Saga. The project is being made to commemorate 25 years of the One Piece anime, and was announced at the recent Jump Festa event.

One Piece has been one of- if not the- most popular anime in Japan for many years, so it's not that surprising that a remake would surface. It's surprising that it would be announced while the original is still going strong. The original cruised past its one-thousandth episode some time ago and shows no sign of ending anytime soon.

The new series can take advantage of the changes in the way that popular anime are made. One Piece runs year round, while modern series such as My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba are released in seasons every year or so and have higher production values and no filler. A One Piece series produced that way is an appealing prospect.

Wit Studio are a very high quality outfit so their talents combined with Eiichiro Oda's storytelling should make for something special.
