Golden Globes Nominees Announced
When it comes to movie awards The Golden Globes are neither the most prestigious not the most respected. They are however among the earliest, so they manage to attract some attention that way. They have often been say as a kind of Oscar predictor, but they by no means always match up. Ahead of the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 7, 2024, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has revealed this year's nominees.
The nominees for Best Picture, Animated are Studio Ghibli's The Boy And The Heron, Pixar's Elemental, Sony's Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse, Comix Wave's Suzume, Illumination's The Super Mario Bros Movie and Disney's Wish. Having six nominations is pretty unusual (The Oscars top out at five) but it makes for an impressive. Seeing two anime films in one category is notable and quite probably unprecedented. The Disney and Pixar nominations are probably the most predictable, but unusually they're not expected to win. Spiderverse and The Boy And The Heron seem to be winning the majority of Animation Of The Year awards at various critics' circles. It's hard to say which of the two will win.
Animated features also scored nominations outside the Animation category. Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse was nominated for Best Score for Daniel Pemberton, and The Boy And The Heron for Joe Hishaishi. They were nominated alongside live-action features Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and The Zone Of Interest.
The Super Mario Bros got an extra nomination for Best Original Song for Peaches. It will go up against 3 songs from Barbie and songs from Rustin and She Came To Me.
Newly introduced this year is Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. This seems to be the equivalent of the Oscar's proposed Best Popular Film category. The Super Mario Bros Movie and Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse have both been nominated, bringing both their totals up to three. The remaining nominees are Barbie, John Wick Chapter 4, Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3, Oppenheimer and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
