'Strange Planet' Trailer Lands
Animation based on comics and graphic novels are commonplace. However, animation based on webcomics are surprisingly rare. Strange Planet is a hit comic series that began online, before later making it into print and becoming a bestseller. And now it has been adapted into an adult animated series for Apple TV+.
Nathan W Pyle's original comics are set on an Earth-like planet. Through the lives of the alien 'beings', it draws attention to the absurdities in our own lives and traditions. It's a very relatable series, which is why it has become a phenomenon on Social Media.
The trailer reveals that the series has brought to life the simple but iconic art style of the original comics. The Alien Beings are blue, while the world around them consists of "cotton candy pinks and purples". It also brings to the screen the Being's very distinctive speech pattern. What isn't entirely clear is if it consists of individual vignettes (as in the original comics) or if there is a connecting plot.
The series is co-created by Pyle with Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon, and produced by Apple Studios and ShadowMachine. The two are also executive producers alongside Alex Bulkley, Corey Campodonico for ShadowMachine, Lauren Pomerantz, Amalia Levari, Steve Levy and Taylor Alexy Pyle.
The series features the voices of Tunde Adebimpe, Demi Adejuyigbe, Lori Tan Chinn, Danny Pudi and Hannah Einbinder.
The first three episodes will be available on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, with new episodes following every Wednesday until the finale on September 27.
