My Father's Dragon Leads 2023 Irish Animation Awards
Ireland's animation industry goes from strength to strength. The country continues to punch above its weight and is able to hold its own on the world stage with much larger nations. The Irish Animation Awards, first held in 2015 were established to celebrate the best in animation produced in the Emerald Isle.
Animation Ireland, the trade association for Irish Animation Studios has announced the nominations for the fifth edition of The biannual Irish Animation Awards. The ceremony is set to take place on Saturday 27 May in Galway. This will be the first in-person event since 2019, due to the Covid pandemic.
This year a record 53 Irish productions were nominated. Leading the pack with seven nominations is Cartoon Saloon's feature produced for Netflix My Father's Dragon, directed by Oscar nominee Nora Twomey. Preschool series Odo, produced for the UK's Channel 5 has six nominations and RTÉ’s preschool Series Ray Of Sunshine has five nominations.
Winners will receive one of the best looking awards out there.Based upon the early animation device the Phenakistoscope, the statuette is designed by animator, filmmaker and teacher EimhÃn McNamara.
Animation Ireland's Chief Executive Ronan McCabe said "It has been another superb year for Irish animation and we now have a record number of Irish productions being nominated. There are nominations from Oscar and Bafta winners alongside stunning work from student producers, and the quality across the board is immense. It’s really heartening that the future remains bright for Irish animation.’’
He added "’It will be great to be back having our awards in person again for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic. We are running a full day event with industry panels and discussions taking place in the morning, followed by the awards ceremony in the evening. Baz Ashmawy is back with us to host the awards ceremony again, so we’ll definitely enjoy that. I must also extend a huge thank you to all of our other sponsors who play such an important role in supporting Irish animation and making this event happen."
The event's headline sponsors are FÃs Éireann/Screen Ireland and RTÉ. Other sponsors include Northern Ireland Screen, Nickelodeon, Milkshake, Cartoon Saloon and Brown Bag Films.
