The Flinstones Sequel 'Bedrock' Gets A Pilot Presentation
The prime-time animation world is dominated by the well established names such as The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers. But long before any of them hit the airwaves there was The Flinstones. Fox Entertainment and Warner Bros Animation are preparing to go back to the world of the prehistoric sitcom with sequel series Bedrock. After nearly two years in development, it has been announced that the series is to get a pilot presentation.
The series comes from Cocaine Bear's Elizabeth Banks, who will executive produce as well as voicing Pebbles Flinstone. The series will take place two decades after the original. It will feature an adult Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm and a Fred on the brink of retirement. As the stone age makes way for the more enlightened Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock have a hard time adjusting.
Alongside Banks Steven Root will voice Fred Flinstone, Amy Sedaris will appear as Wilma, Nicole Byer as Betty, Joe Lo Truglio as Barney Rubble, and Manny Jacinto as Bamm-Bamm. The screenplay is written by Lindsay Kearns. Banks and Max Handelman will Executive Produce through Brownstone Productions. Lindsay Kearns and Dannah Shinder are co-executive producers.
"Long before the Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog, or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were the Flintstones and Bedrock," Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, Fox Entertainment said, "Their imprint on the animation universe is undeniable and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at Fox are very much looking forward to taking on with Warner Bros., Elizabeth and Lindsay. No pressure whatsoever, really."
“The Flintstones are the first family of primetime animation,” Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation added. "Elizabeth and Lindsay have a brilliant take on these characters, and FOX and Brownstone are the perfect partners to bring them back to primetime. This is going to rock (sorry).”
A pilot presentation features a scene or scenes from the show to test the water, but is short of a full-blown pilot episode. There's no guarantee that the show will make it to series- it could still meet the same fate as the aborted Flinstones reboot from Seth MacFarlane- but it sounds like Fox and Warners have a certain degree of confidence in the show.
Assuming the series makes it to air, Bedrock will presumably join the Animation Domination block on Fox that features The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers and the upcoming Krapopolis.
