Pixar's Elemental Gets A New Trailer
Pixar's fortunes have been somewhat mixed over the past couple of years. Following three movies in a row switched to premiere on streaming came Lightyear a rare critical and box-office disappointment for the studio. Will this run of bad luck come to the end with the release of their next feature?
Elemental is directed by Peter Sohn, previously director of The Good Dinosaur (another of Pixar's biggest flops). It has a high-concept set-up that feels like it comes out of an earlier era of Pixar's films. It takes place in Element City, a metropolis populated by anthropomorphized elements such as earth, water, air and fire. The city's residents live by the code that elements don't mix. But one day a fire-person named Ember is thrown together with a water-person named Wade and an unexpected relationship begins to bloom.
The new trailer introduces us to Element City, which has districts populated by each different element. Each region has a distinctive design based on its residents. We're also introduced to the city's population, creating the impression of a bustling and lively place.
We see how Ember and Wade are brought together and have to learn to live with each other. It's a classic set-up for a buddy movie- or potentially even a romantic comedy, although the trailer doesn't reveal if it will go in that direction
The movie has a very stylised look. The setting looks pretty spectacular and the character designs have a very distinctive and bold look: there's something of the striking look of old UPN Cartoons to them.
Elemental will star Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade, Ronnie del Carmen as Ember's Dad Bernie, Shila Ommi as her Mum Cinder, Catherine O’Hara as Wade's Mum and Wendi McLendon-Covey as Wade's boss. It also features the voices of Mason Wertheimer, Innocent Ekakitie and Joe Pera.
The screenplay has been penned by Brenda Hsueh, John Hoberg and Kat Likkel with the story by Sohn, Hsueh, Hoberg and Likkel. The film is produced by Denise Ream and Executive Produced by Pete Docter. Thomas Newman composed the score
Elemental opens in cinemas in the UK on June 6 and in the US on June 16.
