'Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio' Leads 50th Annie Award Winners
The great and the good of the animation world assembled this past weekend for the Annie Awards. Held every year by ASIFA-Hollywood, this year marked their 50th Anniversary. This year's ceremony was the first to take place as an in-person event since the pandemic.
Netflix was the big winner of the night led by five wins for Guillermo del Toro's Pinnochio, including Best Feature and Best Direction In A Feature. There were also multiple wins for Love Death + Robots, Oni: Thunder God's Tale and The Cuphead Show. The winner for Best Feature Independent went to Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, which also picked up gongs for Best Voice Performance and Best Writing In A Feature.
The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse was another big winner taking home four awards including for Direction. Dreamworks Animation took home four awards- two for Puss In Boots The Last Wish, one for The Bad Guys and one for Abominable And The Hidden City.
Despite having dominated proceedings in many past years there were few wins for Disney.They had to settle for a win for Zootopia+ in the voice acting category, one for Bob's Burgers in the mature category and two wins for Avatar: The Way Of Water. Pixar's Turning Red had seven nominations but went home empty handed.
The Best Sponsored went to The Humane Society's Save Ralph. Best Short Subject went to the Oscar-nominated Ice Merchants. The Soloists from Gobelins took home Best Student Film.
The Juried awards, which are selected by ASIFA's Board of directors, were also handed out. The Winsor McCay Awards for career achievement went to Pete Docter, Evelyn Lambart and Craig McCracken. The June Foray award was given to Mindy Johnson for her work in celebrating and highlighting the contributions of women in the animation industry. The Visual Effects Reference Platform, initially developed by Nick Cannon and Francois Chardavoine received the Urb Iwerks Award. The Certificate Of Merit for service to The Art and Industry was given to John Omohundro.
