Awards News: 'Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio' Wins At BAFTAs, VES Awards
This past weekend the great and the good of the world of film, from Britain and beyond assembled in London for the BAFTA Film Awards. Held annually by the British Academy Of Film and Television Arts, they are one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the world.
This year's BAFTA for Best Animated Film went to Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio. The stop-motion film overcame competition from Turning Red, Puss in Boots The Last Wish and Marcel The Shell With Shoes On.
This is only the seventh time that a non-Disney or Pixar film has won since it was established in 2006. It is only the second stop-motion film to win the award (following Kubo and The Two Strings.
The Mexican maestro- who co-directed the film with Mark Gustafson- used his victory speech to celebrate animation as a medium. He thanked BAFTA for allowing his film to be nominated in categories animation is not normally recognised in - it was nominated in best score and production design, although it won neither.
"Animation is not a genre for kids, it is a medium for art, it's a medium for film," he said, " I just think animation should stay in the conversation." And we could not agree more.
The Best British Animated Short Film was awarded to The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse, beating out competition from Middle Watch and Your Mountain Is Waiting. The short (which is also nominated for an Oscar) is based on the best-selling book by Charlie Mackesy, who co-directed with Peter Baynton. It was co-produced by Apple TV+ and the BBC and was broadcast on BBC One last Christmas.Animation should stay in the conversation! 👏 @RealGDT pic.twitter.com/fjjzkpW5Gq

Best Visual Effects went to James Cameron's Avatar The Way Of Water.
The BAFTA is only the latest honour in what has been a very successful awards season for Pinocchio. The film has won 54 awards to date out of 133 nominations.
Last week the Visual Effects Society held their annual VES Awards. Pinnochio was the leading animated film, picking up three more awards. The biggest film overall was Avatar The Way Of Water which won nine awards. The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power was the leading TV series, winning three awards.
