Animation Is Film 2022 Line-Up Revealed
Animation Is Film is the festival that brings the best in international animated cinema to the heart of Hollywood. Held every year at the historic Chinese Theater, the event is a joint venture between GKIDS Films, Annecy International and Variety. And it's back this year for its biggest edition yet.
The opening night film is the US premiere of Henry Sellick's Wendell and Wild. Selleck will be in attendance for a director Q&A to follow the screening. It will be joined by the world premiere of the Japanese feature Gold Kingdom and Water Kingdom from director Kotono Watanabe.
The Saturday will feature two more premieres- the North American Premiere of Cartoon Saloon and Nora Twomey's My Father's Dragon and the world premiere of Oni: Thunder God's Tale from Tonko House. Pixar's Turning Red and Loundraw's Summer Ghost will also screen, both accompanied by filmmaker Q&As. Also, screening is Light Chaser Animation's New Gods: Yang Jian and work-in-progress sessions of Disney's Strange World and DreamWorks Animation's Puss In Boots: The Last Wish.
Sunday's big premiere is Alberto Vasquez's much anticipated Unicorn Wars, accompanied by a filmmaker Q&A. Perlimps, the new film from The Boy And The World's director Alê Abreu will receive its West Coast Premiere and a filmmaker Q&A. European features Titina, Little Nicolas Oink and Aurora's Sunrise will also screen. Lastly, Skydance Animation's first feature Luck will screen, accompanied by a director's Q&A.
Three programs of shorts will also screen across the weekend- the third of which is hosted by Annecy International and Women In Animation (WIA).
This year's festival runs October 21, 22 and 23 and for the first time ever expanding into a second weekend. Saturday October 29 will feature the awards ceremony as well as an additional feature screening, the identity of which is to be announced. The festival teases this special film as being "highly anticipated" and from a "multi-award winning director",
