Disney's 'Strange World' Teaser Promises a Fantastic Journey

2021's Encanto, although groundbreaking in some areas, was a fairly traditional Walt Disney Animation Studio film in many respects. The same doesn't seem to be the case for their upcoming feature Strange World. Due later this year, the film is one of the studio's non-musical efforts with not a princess in sight. Director Don Hall (Big HERO 6) instead is crafting an original action-adventure yarn, that channels pulp novels, comic books and sci-fi and fantasy films of the 1950s and '60s.

Having previously only seen a single piece of concept art, we now have a better idea of what to expect with the release of the first teaser trailer. As far as the plot goes, there's not an awful lot to go on here, but it does a bang-up job of selling us on the film's tone and visual style.

The trailer opens in the style of an old-school trailer (complete with black and white effects) before switching to full-colour hi-def that showcases the bright and beautiful world the film will take place in. With strange and unfamiliar landscapes and weird and wonderful creatures, it looks like the cover of a '50s pulp novel or sci-fi magazine come to life.

We also get to (briefly) meet the film's human leads, the Clades, a legendary family of explorers and their adorable dog (who's a dead ringer for Sprocket from Fraggle Rock). A new poster has also been released that fits the film's aesthetic perfectly.

Check out the teaser trailer from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ all-new feature film “Strange World.” Jake Gyllenhaal (“The Guilty,” “Spider-Man: Far from Home”) lends his voice to Searcher Clade, the son of a steadfast explorer. The original action-adventure journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest—and by far— most crucial mission. Helmed by Don Hall (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Roy Conli  (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Tangled”)

Strange World comes to cinemas in North America from November 23 with the UK and Ireland release following on November 25.
