'Undone' Returns To Melt Our Brains Again This April

Prime Video doesn't have anywhere near the same volume of adult animation that nearest rival Netflix can boast. But what it lacks in numbers, it makes up for in impact- both Invincible and The Legend Of Vox Machina were both big hits. Prime's first adult animated series Undone didn't have quite the cultural impact that those more recent shows, but arguably was the best of them all, and unlike anything else in adult animation.

Undone stood out not only through its stunning rotoscoped animation but by being a comedy-drama, covering themes not often featured in mainstream western adult animation. It's been a long wait since the series debuted back in 2019, but the second season is finally arriving later this month,

The series will reintroduce us to Alma (Roza Salazar), a young woman who discovers she can travel into past memories after a near-death experience. Through her travels, she discovers that the story she has been told about her father's death may not be the full truth.

The trailer (which made its long-awaited debut at WonderCon 2022) teases that the new season is going to see events impact on Alma's whole family. She learns that her sister Becca shares her special ability, and together they try to discover the reason behind their mother's maliase. Their journey will take them back into the heart of their family's history.

Undone is a true original. Its exploration of mental health issues and intergenerational trauma make it much deeper than your average adult animated series. It's not devoid of humour by any means but it doesn't fall back on the sex jokes and salty language that are typical of US adult animation. It's the next evolution of creators and head-writers Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, formerly of BoJack Horseman, another animated comedy that has hidden depths.

The animation production is again by the Dutch animation house Submarine, and Austin, Texas-based Minnow Mountain who coincidentally are also behind Richard Linklater's rotoscoped family fantasy Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood that arrived on Netflix at the beginning of the month. Hisko Hulsing (Junkyard, Cobain: A Montage Of Heck) is returning as director.

Season 2 of Undone will consist of eight episodes that will be released on Prime Video in one hit on Friday, April 29.

In Season Two, Alma realizes there are deeper mysteries in her family’s past. However, no one in her family is interested in digging up uncomfortable truths with her—until she finally convinces her sister Becca to help her look. As the sisters search for answers, they unravel a complex network of memories and motivations that have shaped who they are today. They realize by healing this family trauma they can make all of their lives better.
