TV News: Alabama Jackson, The Boys; Diabolical, Teen Titans Go & DC Super Hero Girls Mayhem In The Multiverse
February marks Black History Month (in the US that is, the UK holds it in October) and Adult Swim is marking it in a very characteristic way. Alabama Jackson is a Adult Swim Digital series, exclusive to their YouTube channel. The stop-motion series is created by and starring Donald Faison (best known for playing Turk in Scrubs) and is made by Stoopid Buddy Studios (Robot Chicken, Crossing Swords). Jackson (voiced by Faison) travels through time with a foul-mouthed Harriet Tubman (Wanda Sykes) in order to protect key moments in Black American history from President Woodrow Wilson.
The series will consist of seven episodes, each released at 12 Noon ET/ 9 am PT from February 15-21. This is set to be the first of several new Digital short series that will debut on the YouTube channel in coming months.
Elsewhere in the WarnerMedia world, Adult Swim's sister network Cartoon Network has announced that the hit Teen Titans Go! will return for an eighth season. It is now the longest-running DC animated series ever, and the new season will take it up to its 400th episode.
Not only that, but the Teen Titans will meet the DC Super Hero Girls in a new crossover movie. Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse will see the characters from the two Cartoon Network DC shows team up to take on the might of the DC supervillains.
With the help of an ancient Kryptonian power, Lex Luthor unites the world’s Super-Villains to capture all of Earth's Super Heroes, until … only the DC Super Hero Girls are left to stop the Legion of Doom. Our heroes must cross dimensions to rescue their fellow Super Heroes from the Phantom Zone, but a fortuitous wrong turn leads them to Titans Tower – where they find much-needed allies in the Teen Titans. The young Super Heroes discover their combined strength – and usual comic relief – are essential to save the day in this blockbuster event!
The movie will debut as a Blu-Ray/DVD combo, standalone DVD and Digital release from May 24 (US & Canada only). It will also screen on Cartoon Network, premiering on May 28. It will also be available on HBO Max from June 28.
Amazon's hit series The Boys is set to get its first spin-off with animated anthology Diabolical, which co-creator Seth Rogan admits is gleefully "ripped-off of The Animatrix). Considering that some people consider The Animatrix to be the only good thing to come out of the Matrix sequels, that may be no bad thing. Check out the newest trailer below. The series will feature eight original stories set in the world of The Boys, written by an impressive line-up of talent. As well as original creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, episodes are written by Awkwafina, Kumail Nanjiani, Aisha Tyler, Garth Ennis, Eliot Glazer and Ilana Glazer, Simon Racioppa, Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth and Andy Samberg.
A variety of visual styles are used, riffing on the likes of classic Tex Avery style cartoons, anime, DC animated and others. Roiland and Bayouth's segment is instantly recognisable as Roiland's art style. Looks like they're all going to be ultraviolent though.
The voice cast will include Simon Pegg, Kevin Smith, Christian Slater, Justin Roiland, and Ben Schwartz, plus original stars of the live-action series Elizabeth Shue and Anthony Starr (Homelander).
