2022 British Animation Awards Nominees Announced
It's been a big week for awards news, with the Oscars releasing the nominees and The Crunchyroll Anime Awards revealing their winners. The biannual British Animation Awards (BAA) aren't nearly as well known as The Academy Awards, and they don't have as wide a reach as Crunchyroll's Awards, but for animation fans, and for the British animation industry they're still a big deal.
"Thanks to the advancement of science, this year the BAAs are crossbreeding with online and in-person events," the website explains. "From March 7th until April 10th there will be an exciting range of online content; from talks, interviews and curated film packages to video contributions from new and established animators." Despite the announcement of the end of all COVID measures in England, they remain in force elsewhere in the UK- and many in England will also continue to be cautious. The BAAs will take place on March 10 at London's BFI Southbank, but will also be streamed for those who cannot be there in person. BAA is also working with partner organisations across the country so that there will also be satellite gatherings in Stirling, Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol for people to enjoy the night together. The ceremony will be MC'd by comedian and actor Miles Jupp.'
The UK industry isn't as big as in some countries. But as befitting an award that is named BAA and has a sheep for a logo, the British Animation Awards are a little quirky. Rather than give every winner just an identical trophy, here winners receive unique prize artwork from some of the most talented people in the creative industries. In past years, artworks have been awarded by artists including Nick Park, Michael Dudok de Wit, Nora Twomey, Tomm Moore, Glenn Keane, Bill Plympton and many other artists from around the world. We can't wait to see the new artwork!
Nominees with recognition in multiple categories include Locksmith Animation's debut feature Ron's Gone Wrong, Aardman's Shaun The Sheep The Flight Before Christmas, Spencer Susser's Save Ralph and Joanna Quinn's Oscar-nominated Affairs Of The Art.
