Crunchyroll Bringing 'Jujustu Kaisen 0' To Cinemas, Anime Ltd Release The Soundtrack
The anime community has been watching with interest to see how things will change at Crunchyroll now that is owned by its former rival Funimation. So far, it has meant sharing of content as the two no longer have to compete for rights. Now we have learned of another perk of the acquisition is that Crunchyroll will be moving into the theatrical market, with the release of the spin-off movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0, based on the hit supernatural action series.
Crunchyroll has previously had some limited theatrical engagements, teaming up with Fathom Events for the Crunchyroll Movie Night, but Funimation have a heck of a lot more experience in this area, having had great success with films such as Your Name, Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Mugen Train. Now with Funimation's help, and the backing of corporate parent Sony they can get a lot more ambitious with their theatrical outings.
Jujutsu Kaisen is one of Crunchyroll's most successful series of recent years and is based on the Shonen Jump manga that has sold more than 60 million collected volumes and published in English by Viz. The series follows Yuji Itadori, an unnaturally strong Highschooler who enrols in a school for shamans in order to try and rid himself of the curse that he willingly took on to save a classmate from a demon. The first season ran for 24 episodes from October 2020 to March of 2021.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (ie Zero) is based on the prequel manga of the same name. The film follows a different character, Yuta Okkotsu as he enrols into Jujustu High to try and break the curse on his childhood friend's soul. But when a villainous curse user who was thrown out of the school for murdering innocents unleashes a deadly threat, Okkotsu has to try and stop him. The film is produced by MAPPA and is directed by Sunghoo Park.
The movie was released in Japan last Christmas Eve and has gone on to rake in an impressive ¥9.3 billion (about $82 million) at the domestic box office. Crunchyroll will release the film with both English subtitled and dubbed versions in the United States and Canada on more than 1500 screens (including some IMAX locations) on March 18. For the first time, Crunchyroll will also be bringing the film to cinemas in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand via CRG Events. They will also screen local-language versions in France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, French-speaking Africa and Latin America, with more territories looking to be added later.
Meanwhile, the UK's Anime Limited have announced that they will release the movie's soundtrack on digital and physical formats. The album is now available in North America, Europe and Oceania on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer and YouTube Music (availability may vary by territory).
The album will feature all 31 tracks from the original Japanese release, including music by Hiroaki Tsutsumi, Yoshimasa Terui and Alisa Okehazama. The album will also get a physical release on vinyl and CD later in 2022
