Crunchyroll Original 'FreakAngels' Gets January Release and New Trailer
Crunchyroll has been the leading name in anime streaming for years now. After purely licensing content direct from Japan for much of its existence, the site has been getting more heavily involved in production more recently. Starting off as a co-producer on several series, their involvement expanded with the launch of the Crunchyroll Originals brand, which included commissioning and producing original animated series. This year alone Crunchyroll has launched Fena Pirate Princess, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, and High Guardian Spice, and announced collaborations with Hollywood stars Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba. This week they have announced that they will be kicking off 2022 with the launch of another major series FreakAngels, based on the award-winning graphic novel series of the same name.
Created by acclaimed comics writer Warren Ellis (Castlevania) and artist Paul Duffield, FreakAngels is a story of battling psychics in post-apocalyptic London. Although its a western comic adaptation, the series features anime talent with character designs from Hiroshi Shimizu and art design from Osamu Masuyama. Animation was produced in-house by Crunchyroll Studios.
Crunchyroll released the synopsis:
Welcome to Whitechapel: last bastion of humanity. Six years ago, the world “ended” in a single, apocalyptic event, trapping Great Britain behind a mysterious dome of purple energy. London’s last neighborhood has persevered thanks to the protection of the “FreakAngels” — a small group of psychically-powered twenty-three-year-olds. Their fragile peace becomes threatened, however, when an exiled friend returns, exposing past conspiracies and new conflicts within their fractured, makeshift family. Can Whitechapel survive?
The series will launch all nine episodes on January 27 and will be in English with subtitles available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian, and Arabic. Crunchyroll also released a brand new trailer, check it out below.
