Critical Role:The Legend Of Vox Machina Gets New Release Date, Preview Clip
Tabletop Role-Playing Game Dungeons and Dragons has been around for a long time. But it seems to have experienced an explosion in popularity in the past few years- it's fair to say that D&D has never been as visible as it is right now. Driving that popularity has been podcasts and video streaming of 'real play', where people have been drawn in following campaigns. One of the most popular is Critical Role which started as a game played between a group of voice actors including Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, Liam O'Brian and Tallesin Jaffe. It's evolved into an original universe of its own and features a popular podcast and YouTube channel, and span off comics books, graphic novels, merchandise and even tabletop RPGs of its own. It's also getting its own adult animated series The Legend Of Vox Machina.
Adapted from its own original campaign, Vox Machina started off as a plan for a 22-minute pilot funded on Kickstarter, reaching its goal in minutes and becoming one of the most successful projects in the site's history. The crowdfunding campaign managed to raise more than $11 million, allowing it to expand into a full series. Amazon Studios bought the rights to the series and promptly ordered an additional 14 episodes, ensuring the series will run for at least 24 episodes across two seasons. The show will stream exclusively on Prime Video.
Based on the beloved characters and adventures of Critical Role’s first livestreamed tabletop role-playing game (RPG) campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated fantasy-adventure series for adults that follows Vox Machina, a band of misfits with a fondness for boozing and brawling. In a desperate attempt to pay off their mounting bar tab, these unlikely heroes end up on a quest to save the realm of Exandria from dark magical forces. From a sinister necromancer to a powerful curse, the group confronts a variety of obstacles that not only test their skills, but also the strength of their bond.
The series is produced by Amazon Studios, with animation production by Titmouse Cartoons. The series will feature the original cast members include Bailey, Jaffe, Johnson and Mercer, with the cast also serving as executive producers.
In an unusual move, Prime Video has announced the series will arrive a week sooner than expected and will now stream from January 28 in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. A brand new clip was released to accompany the new, which you can see below,
