Tuca & Bertie Renewed For Season 3 By Adult Swim
Adult animation lovers were disappointed when Netflix decided against picking up a second season of Tuca & Bertie. Netflix's loss
was
Adult Swim's gain, as the network stepped in, in a rare example of a broadcast network saving a
series from streaming. It was a shrewd move, as the series would bring a much
needed female perspective to the network, which has had some (not undeserved)
criticism in recent years for being something of a boy's club.
The second season finally arrived this Summer, where it has been airing on
Sunday nights, alongside Adult Swim's biggest show
Rick and Morty's latest season. Now, before season two has even
finished airing, it has been revealed that the show has already been renewed
for season three.
Tuca & Bertie has performed very well for the network and has attracted a
significant increase in viewers in the teenage and young women (18-24)
demographics. It has also consistently been #1 in its timeslot on basic cable
for teens, adults 18-35 and men 18-49 (excluding sports). There will of
course be a considerable crossover with the Rick and Morty audience, but this
also clearly attracts an audience of its own.
Created by BoJack Horseman alum Lisa Hanawalt, the series
explores the lives of two city-dwelling roommate millennial birds (the
feathered kind, I haven't started being extra British) voiced by
Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong. BoJack creator
Raphael Bob-Waksberg is an executive producer, alongside stars
Haddish and Wong, Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen.
Adult Swim teases the show:
Tuca (Haddish) and Bertie (Wong) are best friends, and they’re both full of ghosts! Bertie is busy excavating her inner ghouls with the help of a therapist, while Tuca prefers to stuff hers behind the toilet. She’ll deal with them later, right now she’s just too busy trying not to be single anymore! Meanwhile, Speckle (Steven Yeun) is building a new house but soon finds he's driven to the brink of insanity...good thing he’s just a cartoon.
There is good news for Tuca & Bertie fans outside the US too. Adult Swim
have now secured the international rights to both season two and three and
will distribute them globally through their brand. For fans in the UK, this
means we'll probably see the series through their partnership with
Channel 4, most likely with an E4 broadcast and streaming
on the Adult Swim channel on the All4 streaming service.
The final two episodes of Tuca & Bertie season two will air in the United
States on August 8 and August 15 at 11:30 pm ET/PT.
