First Trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy Is Delightfully Weird
Back in 2016, I wrote a tidbit about how Warner Bros. was finally planning a sequel to Space Jam, the roundhouse screwball sports comedy featuring Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny, and an All-Star cast of Looney Tunes and sports favorites. That was five years ago.
About 3 years later, in 2019, producers announced LeBron James would be starring in the long-anticipated sequel, now called Space Jam: A New Legacy.
And now, on April 3rd, over a week ago, we finally got our first looks at the trailer.
My opinion? I actually think it might be good.
Weird, but good.
If the trailer is anything to go off, I imagine New Legacy will be a great follow-up to its predecessor. Instead of solely focusing on the Looney Tunes, the film takes place in a digital universe filled with thousands of WB properties. Cameos from King Kong, the Iron Giant, Jack Nicholson’s Joker, Pennywise, the Mask, the Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, and Wonder Woman are extremely fun.
Maybe they should’ve called this Space Jam: Ready Player Bun.
Disney alumni Tony Bancroft (designer of iconic characters like Cogsworth, Iago, and Pumbaa) heads the animation team for this project. Yes…there’s actual 2D animation in the film. And it is refreshingly cool. I love seeing the Looney Tunes characters as they should be, and it’s even funnier to see LeBron James transformed into a toon himself.
So, what do you think? Will Space Jam: A New Legacy be a tip-top follow up to the original, or will it splat like a skydiving Wile E Coyote? Watch the trailer and see for yourself!
Space Jam: A New Legacy stomps into theaters and flies onto HBO Max July 16, 2021.
