Sonic Prime, Pacific Rim: The Black, Game Of Thrones Animated Series and More

The world of streaming is fast-moving and the news about animation just keeps coming. We've rounded up some of the top stories, here. You're welcome.

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Sega's Sonic The Hedgehog video game franchise. The blue blur is indisputably one of the most iconic characters in gaming, recognisable even to non-gamers alongside the likes of Mario and Lara CroftAlthough only starring in his debut movie last year, Sonic has been consistently popular in other media for years, having a long history in comics and animation, both in the US and Japan. The newest Sonic series has just been announced, and this time, it's coming to Netflix.

Sonic Prime is a joint production between Netflix, Sega of America and Canada's WildBrain. The series will be CG animated, and the first 24 episode season is slated to debut in 2022. Netflix describes it as a "high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands." Animation production will be at WildBrain's Vancouver studio.

The pseudonymous Man Of Action, creators of the hit Ben 10 franchise and the original characters of Big Hero 6 are to be showrunners and executive producers on the series.

Netflix have dropped a trailer for Pacific Rim: The Black,  the CG animated spin-off of Guillermo del Toro's mecha versus kaiju franchise. The trailer reveals that the series- a co-production between Netflix and Legendary Television, with animation from Polygon Pictures- will land on Netflix on March 4.

HBO Max is in the early stages of developing an animated series set in the Game Of Thrones universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter. With the original series over, HBO is exploring ways to expand on the world created by George RR Martin. They brought on several teams to develop live-action prequels, but not all of them were given the green light. The first is due to start production later this year. THR notes that the animated version hasn't been officially commissioned as yet.

There are no other details yet (such as whether its a prequel or sequel, or who might be involved) but the idea of a big-budget fantasy animated series for adults is exciting. The series would have the freedom to explore the more fantastical elements of the Song of Ice and Fire universe more easily.

Apple TV have released a charming trailer for The Snoopy Show,  the latest animated adaptation of Charles Shulz's iconic Peanuts comic strips. As the trailer reveals, the series will be a reboot that takes us back to the first meeting of the titular pooch and Charlie Brown and is set to feature all the elements that have made the adventures of Charlie Brown and Snoopy so enduringly popular. The six episode season will stream on Apple TV Plus from February 5.
