Mama Mia! Pixar's Luca First Teaser Trailer is Here

Looking ahead to the animated films due to be released later this year, we're all sure to be approaching with caution. The rollout of vaccines gives us reason to be optimistic that cinemas will be able to function more normally in the not-too-distant future. But if the last year has taught us anything, it's that you shouldn't take anything for granted. Nonetheless, as things stand Disney is planning to release the next Pixar film in cinemas this summer. Will Luca be given a hybrid release, with early access via Disney Plus, following Raya And The Last Dragon's example? That decision will probably be made nearer the slated June 18 release.

Luca is Pixar's newest original film and is the feature debut for director Enrico Casarosa, who previously wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated short La Luna. The film is based on Casarosa's childhood growing up in the Italian Riveria, it's a coming of age film featuring the friendship between a young boy and a sea-monster disguised as a human. We're going to assume that the 'sea monster' part isn't autobiographical.

This week the studio has released a brand new poster and unveiled our first look at the film in motion with the debut teaser trailer.

The teaser does a fantastic job of establishing a sense of place and atmosphere, with a lovely summery mood. You can practically feel the warmth of the sun and smell the ocean. Luca looks a lot like it's going to feel like a holiday- and it could hardly be coming at a better time.

It also brilliantly manages to capture that childhood feeling of endless summers and looks set to mine a deep well of nostalgia. The teaser only briefly touches on the sea monster storyline, so it feels like we are only getting a fraction of the story here. Which seems only appropriate in a teaser trailer. But as far as selling us on the film? We'd have to call it a roaring success.
