Web Animation Watch: Star Wars Recap, Coffin, Supersonic and More
Well, hello there stranger. We have to stop meeting like this. Welcome back to
Web Animation Watch our regular feature highlighting the latest and greatest in online animation. Welcome to what is probably the last regular instalment of 2020.
If you've made something- be it a web short, web series episode, student film, music video or something else- you think would be a good fit for a future column, or if you've just found something cool, please drop us a line.
Supersonics | Caravan Palace
A smart mix of live-action and animation, this music video for the new track
from Electro-house act
Caravan Palace comes across a mix of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Street Art. A
Graffiti artist interacts with his creations in this new video from French animation studio Cumulus. Directed by Bechir "Jiwee" Jouini.
The Ultimate Star Wars: A New Hope Recap Cartoon
The wonderful Cas van de pol is back to recap more iconic movies in an anarchic and irreverent way like only they know how. Now they have reached the first Star Wars movie, which is retold with far more bloody violence, a thirstier Luke and more gags than you remember. Hilarious stuff, whether you're a Star Wars fan or not! Produced by Cas with Junaid Chundrigar
Blue and Curt
Lovably stubborn monster Curt and wily bird Blue start in this short
but sweet film from
Jesters Animation. The film's visuals have a lovely children's picturebook style to them and it does an impressive job of establishing characters in such a short space of time. Hopefully, it won't be the last we've seen of these two!
Coffin
A genuinely oppressive and claustrophobic sense of place is created in this new short from the 2020 Gobelins graduation films. Featuring a young man in a crowded shared living space in southern China and his attempts to just get to sleep- and all the noisy roommates getting in the way. Atmospheric and highly imaginative stuff.
You Ain't Getting Nothing | Goo Goo Dolls
And finally, something, to get you in a festive mood ahead of our Christmas special! American rock stalwarts Goo Goo Dolls new festive themed track comes complete with a perfectly matched video. Venturia Animation Studios and director Juan M. Urbina have crafted a brilliant tribute to classic animated Holiday specials, with an obvious particular debt to Chuck Jones's iconic adaptation of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. It'll make your heart grow two sizes. Taken from the album It's Christmas All Over.
