In other news, Netflix have announced new action-comedy series My Dad the Bounty Hunter created by Everett Downing (co-director of Oscar-Winning short Hair Love) and Patrick Harpin (story artist on Hotel Transylvania 2 and 3, storyboarder on Gravity Falls). The creators say "We can’t wait to share our brainchild with the world. My Dad the Bounty Hunter is a love letter to animation, science fiction, and Black families rolled into a crazy action-comedy. We threw everything we love about sci-fi into this show, but it’s the family at the center of the story that we’re most excited about." The series will be animated at Dwarf Animation, a French studio who is also producing the animation for upcoming Disney Plus series Monsters At Work for Pixar. The voice cast will feature Russell Hornsby, Yvonne Orji, Priah Ferguson, Yvette Nicole Brown, JeCobi Swain, Leslie Uggams, Rob Riggle and Jim Rash.
Netflix released the show' synopsis:
The action-comedy series follows the toughest bounty hunter in all the galaxy, a man with razor-sharp skills but also a secret - his family on Earth has no idea what he does for a living. So when his two kids accidentally hitch a ride into outer space and crash his latest mission, they discover that their average Dad's job is anything but boring. Dodging dangerous aliens and laser fights galore, this family bonding time goes to the extreme. Wait until mom finds out…
This is awesome news, as we've been following Downing's career for some time. Just a few years ago he turned to crowdfunding trying to make a previous pitch The Book Of Mojo a reality. While Mojo never made it (at least not yet), seeing his career going from strength to strength is exciting. Back then, Downing felt crowdfunding was the only way to get more black voices represented in animation. The fact that My Dad The Bounty Hunter and other black-lead stories are getting the greenlight is hopefully a sign that the industry is changing.
