Watch This! Rebooted
What happens to movie special effects when they become out of date? It's a question which inspired Australian filmmaker Michael Shanks aka Timtimfed to create the new short film Rebooted. The short is a mix of live-action and animation starring a character named Phil.
Phil is a stop-motion animated skeleton who starred in Ray Harryhausen style movies in the 1960s. Fast forward to the modern-day and with CGI having taken over, he finds himself surplus to requirements. But what will he do when he finds that 1000 Sandals, the movie that made him famous, is about to get rebooted?
Rebooted is written and directed by Shanks, with the stop-motion animated produced by Samuel Lewis (who also produced the puppets). The stop-motion alone took 6 months. But it definitely paid off, as Phil's movement does a wonderful job of authentically capturing that classic Harryhausen look and feel.
It's a clever spin on the reality of ageing in Hollywood, where actors may find they are no longer in as much as demand as they were when they were younger. It's also something of a loveletter to movie special effects throughout history. Later on, Phil shares the screen with characters created using several other different animation and VFX technologies- CGI, animatronics, puppetry and cel animation. Seeing them all together, interacting with live-action film, is quite something- and in impressive technical feat.
The way Phil (and other VFX characters) blend with the live footage is brilliantly done. Each scene was shot twice- once with Shanks copying Phil's movements, and once without. You can find out more about the process in the making-of video, which we've included at the bottom of this page.
Rebooted was co-funded by Screen Australia and YouTube. It was written, directed and produced by Shanks, who also wrote the original score. Jack Nolan produced the 3D animation. Check out the short, below!
