Pendelton Ward's 'Midnight Gospel' Trailer Is A Hell Of A Trip
While much of the entertainment industry is in shutdown as companies scramble to adapt to the international emergency, nothing seems to stop Netflix. With much of the world stuck at home, more people are going to be looking for something to watch. Luckily, there's plenty coming down the pipeline, and they've now dropped the first trailer for an upcoming animated series.
The streaming giant has attracted some of the top-tier animation talent in the world. Among them is Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward, who has produced his first adult animated series for the site. The Midnight Gospel is created by Ward alongside Duncan Trussell (Duncan Trussell Family Hour podcast).
The series stars a character named Clancy who "is a space-caster who uses a multiverse simulator to interview beings living in other worlds." The pitch sounds like a perfect meeting of the imaginative worlds of Ward and the podcasting background of Trussell. The series is inspired by Trussell's podcast and features interview clips from the original show.
The trailer is short, but is quite something. Even if we're not sure what that something is. If you thought Adventure Time was trippy and surreal, you ain't seen nothing yet. Ward's imagination is fully let off the leash here, with some incredibly bizarre visuals. The animation comes courtesy of Titmouse. To ensure its adult credentials, there's also salty language and suggestive imagery that would give the standards and practises department at Cartoon Network palpations. It's incredibly bold stuff that looks like Masaaki Yuasa's fever dreams. How mainstream audiences are going to take to it is anybody's guess.
The Midnight Gospel's first eight-episode season streams on Netflix from April 20. Check out the trailer, below.
