'Weathering With You' Makes A Splash At The Box Office; UK Release Expanding
Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You has arrived in the UK, US, Canada and Ireland and has made quite a splash on both sides of the pond. The fan preview screenings with Fathom Events in the US saw it become the number two movie in the country for both days. It went on to gross a total of over $5 million over six days and has become US distributor GKIDS Film's highest-grossing release to date.
Meanwhile, Anime Limited who have released the film in the UK and Ireland, announced that the film took £221,320 in its opening weekend (including previews) which is nearly 10 times the opening of Shinkai's previous smash Your Name.
Due to fan demand, Anime Limited will be massively expanding the UK release of Weathering With You from the current 40 screens to over 250 on January 30. This will make it one of the widest releases for a non-Ghibli, non-Pokemon anime seen in the UK to date. You can find a screening near you here.
Weathering With You was Japan's highest-grossing film of last year, and is currently the country's seventh highest grossing animated film of all time (the sixth Japanese made). It was Japan's selection for the International Film category at the Oscars, was the joint audience winner at Animation Is Film Festival and has been nominated for Animation Of The Year at Japan's Academy Prizes.
