Netflix Partnering With Nexus On Stop Motion Anthology "The House"

This week's double Academy Award nominations have helped cement Netflix's place as one of the biggest names in animation. But what separates the streamer from many of its rivals is that it is investing in many different kinds of animation, both for family and adult audiences. The latest of the latter to be announced is the extremely intriguing-sounding The House, being made in conjunction with BAFTA winning studio Nexus.

The House is an eccentric dark comedy film centred "on a house and the surreal tales of three generations of families who made it their home." The film will bring together three of the most exciting talents in independent stop-motion, with each producing one "chapter":

• Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels, Belgian directors of the award-winning This Magnificent Cake!

• Niki Lindroth von Bahr, Swedish director of 2017's The Burden, winner of top prizes at Annecy and Toronto International Film Festival.

Paloma Baeza, British director of BAFTA and Annie Award winning short Poles Apart.

Both von Bahr and Baeza were also included on 2018's Top 10 Animators To Watch by Variety. The project is being produced at Nexus's London studio, making it Netflix's first UK-made adult animation effort.  From the announcement, it's not quite clear if this is being released as a single film or as separate shorts Love Death & Robots style.

"The House is a collection of cinematic stories that are intelligent, witty, inquisitive, warm and yet packed with offbeat humour. For this project, Nexus are bringing together, for the very first time, three of the most unique and multi-awarded voices in independent stop motion animation today in Niki, Marc & Emma and Paloma " says Charlotte Bavasso, Nexus Studio co-founder and producer. "This production is an organic collaboration between brilliant and like-minded storytellers. We're thrilled to have found in Netflix such a perfect home for The House."

"Nexus Studios has a remarkable history of working with the best animators from all over the world,” added Mike Moon,  Netflix Head of adult animation. "We’re thrilled to partner with Nexus and their incredible directors to bring The House to life."

No release date has been announced for The House at this time, but this is definitley a project we'll be keeping our eye on.
