47th Annie Awards: Netflix, 'Frozen 2' and 'Missing Link' Lead Nominations
The awards have attracted flack in past years for being dominated by the Walt Disney Company (including Pixar), although last year it was in fact Sony who won the lion's share with Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. This year, Frozen 2 has scored the highest number of nominations in the feature categories, an honour shared with LAIKA's Missing Link. Both films scored eight nominations, including nods for Best Feature and Best Directing- Feature. Just behind is SPA Studio's Klaus, scoring seven nominations, including Feature and Directing. Pixar's Toy Story 4, Xilam's I Lost My Body and DreamWorks Animation's How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World all bagged six nominations, including Best Animated Feature - or Best Feature- Independent, in the case of I Lost My Body.
Rounding out the Best Feature- Independent category are four GKIDS Films releases- Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You, Trigger's Promare, Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles and Madhouse's Okko's Inn. Weathering With You is the most successful anime feature of the year, also winning nominations for directing, writing and effects.
The biggest story of all though is the rise of Netflix. Just a few years after crashing the party for the first time, the streaming giant has established itself as a major player in animation. Netflix productions and acquisitions have scored a total of 39 nominations, compared to 18 from DreamWorks and 16 from Disney. As well as the huge success of Klaus and I Lost My Body in the feature categories, they also did well in TV- now renamed TV/Media to adapt to the changing entertainment landscape. There were multiple nominations for series including Love, Death & Robots and Tuca & Bertie- the latter a little bitter-sweet in the light of its cancellation. Amazon also scored nominations including for its debut adult animation Undone, and Apple got its first nomination for Snoopy In Space.
The biggest animated film of 2019 (and indeed of all-time) is notable for its glaring absence. Despite poor reviews, Jon Favreau's The Lion King was an indisputable technical landmark and a fully animated film. It seems likely that Disney didn't even submit it, in keeping with their baffling insistence that it's not an animated film (which to be clear, it is).
