Crowdfund This! 'Hand-Drawn' Documentary Finishing Fund

The supposed death of 2D animation may have been somewhat exaggerated. The major studios may have left it behind, but it's in rude health elsewhere. A new documentary film sets out to explore the art's current state and future, through interviews with some of its foremost talents. Hand Drawn is the brain-child of director Felicity Morland and associate producer Aidan Fantinatto

The film previously ran a successful Indiegogo campaign in 2018. So why are they returning to the platform now? In essence, the project became something of a victim of its own success. They have already filmed over 35 interviews with animators from across the world, and have ended up with a lot more content than they first imagined. "This means the scope of our project has grown significantly", says Morland. "Which is amazing, but this also means we've run into many other extra production expenses along the way". The new funds will be used towards the post-production phase, but also a final round of interviews, including some in Japan. The new campaign will also feature the chance to get your hands on the Blu-Ray version of the film for the first time ever.

Hand Drawn sounds like something of a dream come true for animation fans and will feature interviews with some of the biggest names in 2D animation. Interviewees include Bill Plympton, James Baxter, Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey, Floyd Norman, Jorge Gutierrez, Benjamin Renner, and Aya Suzuki.

As well as Blu-Rays, the perks offered also include digital downloads, T-shirts, pins and animated portraits. Backers of the previous campaign can get the Blu-Ray for a discounted price of $15.

The campaign is seeking to raise $25,000 by December 8. It's a fixed goal, so if it doesn't reach the target, they won't be able to fulfill the rewards. Stretch goals include an extended cut if they reach $35,000.
