Makoto Shinkai's 'Weathering With You' Opens In The US January
After the massive critical and financial success of Makoto Shinkai's smash-hit Your Name, the director's follow up film was bound to get a lot of attention. Since it opened in Japan this past July it has gone on to be the county's biggest hit of the year, going on to become only the sixth Japanese animated film to surpass ¥10 billion. It is also currently the 13th most successful film of all time at the Japan box-office and has been selected as Japan's entry to be put forward for best international film at the 2020 Oscars.
The film puts a fantasy spin on teen romance in a similar way to Your Name. This time it sees a high-schooler run to Tokyo where he meets a mysterious girl who possesses the ability to control the weather.
GKIDS have now released a brand-new English subtitled trailer for the film. And perhaps, more importantly, they have announced the US release date. We had previously been promised that an awards-qualifying run in late 2019 would be followed by a release in "Early 2020". It turns out, that it's not going to be much of a wait, as that early 2020 release date is January 17. No further release information has been confirmed just yet- but it would be a fair bet that this will be getting the Fathom Event screening treatment.
The awards qualifying run has not been announced yet, but the film will receive its US premiere this month at the Animation Is Film Festival. The UK premiere will take place this month at the Scotland Loves Anime festival, before a UK and Ireland release in early 2020.
