'Klaus' Trailer: An Early Christmas Gift From Netflix

Ever since the first teaser trailer made its way online Sergio Pablos's animated feature Klaus has been one of our most anticipated films. For a long time, it wasn't even clear if the long-gestating project would even come to fruition- that was until Netflix stepped in to acquire the film.

Klaus is, in essence, a Santa Claus origin story, where a hapless postman named Jesper teams up with Klaus, a mysterious toymaker with a big white beard to spread festive joy to "the unhappiest place on Earth". It's not the plot that has the animation community buzzing though, but the animation itself.

The fact that it's 2D animated is notable enough, but the combination of traditional and CG techniques used give it a unique look. Pablos brings a distinctly non-Hollywood look to the character designs and art style. He's credited with the original pitch that eventually became Despicable Me but the final film was very different to his original sketches- Klaus, on the other hand, seems to be true to his original vision.

The English version of the film stars Jason Schwartzman as Jesper, J.K. Simmons as Klaus, and also features Rashida Jones, Joan Cusack and Will Sasso.

Netflix will be opening the film in select cinemas in the US on November 8, before it arrives on Netflix on November 15 worldwide. This is a strong indicator that Netflix is very confident in the film and will likely be pushing it for best animated film come Awards season. Check out the trailer (and the new poster), below!

This holiday season, discover the unlikely friendship that launched a legend. Watch Klaus on #Netflix November 15th, 2019. #KlausNetflix

When Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) distinguishes himself as the postal academy’s worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva (Rashida Jones), and discovers Klaus (Oscar® winner J.K. Simmons), a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore and stockings hung by the chimney with care. An animated holiday comedy directed by Despicable Me co-creator Sergio Pablos, KLAUS co-stars Joan Cusack, Will Sasso and Norm Macdonald.
