'The Oatmeal' Creator Matthew Inman Making Feature For Illumination
If you're on the internet, there's a good chance you've come across The Oatmeal. Even if you don't know it by name, the comic by Matthew Inman has a habit of going Viral. You may have seen his popular comics like Cat Vs Internet, How To Suck At Your Religion and My Dog The Paradox. Based on the webcomic, he's published several successful books, and the card game Exploding Kittens. It turns out that Inman had been wanting to transition from comics to animation for some time.
In a new blog post, he reveals that he has been working with animation studio Illumination Entertainment for around 18 months. He has been working as a creative consultant and worked on material for the newly released Secret Life Of Pets 2.
More significantly, however, is the news that he will be working on a feature of his own for the studio. It's still a long way off and what it's actually about remains under wraps for now. In the meantime, Inman will be working less on The Oatmeal. "I am not going to disappear, but I'm going to be publishing fewer comics," he says. "If you see a new comic from me, think of it as a delightful blessing -- like finding an old M&M in your couch."
This is interesting news for any fan of The Oatmeal. This isn't the first time that Illumination have brought in a creator from outside. The last time they did was British director Garth Jennings who made the generally well-received Sing. We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this project.
