Annecy Competition Crowns 'I Lost My Body', 'Away' 'Buñuel' And More
The Annecy International Animation Festival has come to a close for another year. This year's festival boasted record attendance, with the event attracting 12,300 badgeholders -compared to 11,700 badgeholders in 2018) The closing night ceremony, as always, saw the winners of the competition crowned for another year. The Special Prizes were also handed out in a ceremony the previous evening.
This year's guest country may have been Japan, but despite the large number of Japanese film in the selection, they were shut out of the awards entirely. Instead, the Jury who include luminaries such as Dean Deblois, Nora Twomey and Studio Ponoc's Yoshiaki Nishimura selected films from countries such as Spain, Latvia, the UK, US and Argentina. But it was the festival's home country of France itself that was the big winner, taking home ten awards in total.
Jérémy Clapin's I Lost My Body followed up its Cannes victory with a double victory here, winning the prestigious Cristal For A Feature Film and Audience Award. The Jury Distinction went to Buñuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles, which also won an award for Music In A Feature Film.
The winner of the Contrechamp Award was Away, a feature film made single-handedly by Latvian animator Gints Zilbalodis.
The Annecy Festival will return for its 60th Edition from June 15 to June 2020, and it will spotlight African Animation. The full list of winners is below.
