New Masaaki Yuasa Feature's Trailer and Poster Released
The last couple of years have been huge for visionary Japanese director Masaaki Yuasa. 2017 saw the one-two-punch of his features Lu Over The Wall and The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl. In 2018 he had his highest-profile release yet with the series Devilman Crybaby on Netflix. Now, summer 2019 will see the release - in Japan at least- of his next feature Kimi to Nami ni Noretara.
His recent works have varied so much in tone, that we never know what to expect next from him. The debut trailer for Kimi to Nami (current English title Riding A Wave With You) reveal that the film looks closer to an older-skewing Lu Over The Wall than anything else.
The story will follow a romance between a surfer-girl (Hinako) and a fireman (Minato). Hinako is heartbroken after Minato dies at sea, but discovers that when she sings, he reappears in the water.
It's a pretty bonkers set up, but that's nothing new from Yuasa. Even without the benefit of subtitles, this is looking extremely promising, with typically eye-catching animation from Yuasa's studio Science Saru.
Set for release in Japan on June 21, we hope to see an international release before too long.
