Netflix Reveal 'Pacific Rim' And More Animated Series.
Another day, another slate of animation announcement from Netflix. The company held a presentation in Singapore where it unveiled its plans for upcoming Asian, or Asian influenced content. This included a number of animated series and movies. Netflix refers to all the projects as "anime", despite them being a mix of actual Japanese animation and "anime-influenced" series produced elsewhere.
The highest profile is an animated Pacific Rim series. The spin-off series from Guillermo del Toro's movies was actually originally announced at the same time as the second film, but hasn't really been heard of since around 2014. Now the series has resurfaced at Netflix, under showrunners Craig Kyle (credited as a writer on Thor Ragnorok) and Greg Johnson (head writer on X-Men Evolution). The plot will follow "two siblings - an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister - who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents." The series is being produced by Legendary Entertainment. Despite Netflix's insistence on calling it "anime", it's currently unknown if any Japanese studios are involved (as was the original plan).
Also announced is an animated feature based on the Netflix original sci-fi-fi series Altered Carbon. Set in the same universe as the TV show, it is written by Dai Saito (Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex) and Tsukasa Kondo, and animated by French studio Anima.
Produced by studio Gonzo (Hellsing), Cagaster of an Insect Cage is a post-apocalyptic series based on a manga of the same name. The series will be directed by Koichi Chigira (Last Exile, Full Metal Panic!). Also adapted from a graphic novel, but this time from The Philippines, Trese is set in Manilla "where the mythical creatures of Philippine folklore live in hiding amongst humans." The series is being produced by BASE Entertainment, a studio based in Jakarta and Singapore.
Last but by no means least is Yasuke, a series set "a war-torn feudal Japan of mechs and magic." The animation is being produced by MAPPA (Yuri On Ice) and the series is created and directed by LeSean Thomas (Cannon Busters). The main character is based on a real-life samurai of African Origin.
None of the series or films have revealed release dates at this time, but we'll be sure to keep you updated!
