'The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part' Teaser Trailer Arrives
It's been more than four years since the breakout success of The Lego Movie. Since then we've had two more entries in the Lego universe, The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie, neither of which managed to be quite as successful critically or in box-office terms as the original movie. Next year we are finally getting a direct sequel- but is everything still awesome?
The first trailer has now arrived for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. The original film caught everyone by surprise, by spinning gold out of what seemed like a bad idea. Can they possibly hope to recapture the same magic? Original writer/ directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are producing this time, with Trolls director Mike Mitchell and Trisha Gum taking their place as directors. Lord and Miller are still credited as writers this time, alongside Matt Fogel, Michelle Morgan, Dominic Russo and BoJack Horseman's Raphael Bob-Waksberg.
This first teaser is pretty reassuring, as tonally it feels in keeping with the original. The events of the original seem to have left Brickburg a Mad Max-style wasteland (conveniently a fellow Warner Bros Property).
The main story this time around is an alien invasion (by Duplo).Returning from the original are Emmet, Lucy/Wyldstyle Lego Batman and Unikitty. The major new character is the apparent villain of the piece, Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi, voiced by Tiffany Haddish.
Back in 2015, Lord and Miller said the sequel would be set four years after the original (although the film has been delayed several times and could have changed quite a lot since then). They also promised "more female characters and more female stuff, and the trailer seems to confirm that. It seems that the character of Lucy (voiced by Elizabeth Banks) might have an even more significant role this time around, too.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will be released on February 8, 2019.
