'Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Intro Lands
Nickelodeon have revealed the intro sequence and theme song for the upcoming TMNT reboot Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Due to debut later this year, the series will see the franchise return to 2D.
The new incarnation will be quite a shake-up, introducing mystical elements and making some pretty radical changes to the character designs. Each of the turtles is now a different species. April O'Neil is portrayed as an African-American character (as she was in some of the early original comics) and will get more involved in the action. Inevitably the changes have lead to some complaints from long-time fans (although not nearly as bad as the reaction to Thundercats Roar) but this looks like an interesting new direction.
The intro sequence features some extremely fluid animation and slick action, that shows off the new turtles' moves. It's pretty bright and colourful, suggesting that isn't going to be another dark and gritty reboot. The series is being pitched as having a younger feel and more humour, but the intro suggests it will deliver on the action front, too. And crucially, (for the older fans) it's all accompanied by an updated version of the iconic original theme from the 80's original.
The new series is set to debut in September 2018 and will feature the voices of Josh Brenner, Omar Miller, Ben Schwartz, Brandon Mychal Smith, Kat Graham and Eric Bauza. John Cena and Rhys Derby will also have recurring roles, and the legendary voice-actor (and original turtle) Rob Paulson will be voice director.
Nickelodeon have announced that they will share more about the series at the show's panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con on July 19.
