Streaming News: DreamWorks Signs With Hulu, 'DC Universe' Revealed
The media landscape has been changing dramatically over the past few years, with streaming video changing the way we watch. Established Studios have had to decide how best to adapt to the changes. At first DreamWorks Animation was locked into an exclusive deal with Netflix. Post Comcast acquisition though, the studio seems to be branching out with new partners.
The deal with Netflix is far from over. There are at least six new shows still to come, including the She-Ra Reboot, 3 Below, and the newly announced Fast & Furious series. Plus existing hit series like Trollhunters and Voltron will continue until the end of their runs. However, DWA has also signed on to produce the new Rocky and Bullwinkle and Kung Fu Panda series for Amazon Video. Now a third player has entered the mix, as the studio has now announced a new deal with the streaming platform Hulu.
The multiyear deal will include both movies and television. Hulu is set to become the exclusive home for both future DreamWorks releases and their catalog, in the United States. The deal will start in 2019 and will include the upcoming releases How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The Boss Baby 2, eventually expanding to include their past films too.
The deal will also see Hulu partner with DreamWorks Animation Television to produce a new slate of TV series based on the studio's existing and upcoming franchises. These will debut on the streaming service starting in 2020.
Hulu is currently only available in the US (and Japan), so there's a chance that these series may be picked up by other companies in other territories.
In other news, Warner Bros. has announced a new streaming service home for its DC Comics based content. DC Universe will be the exclusive home for a number of shows, both live-action and animated. The animated offering will be headed up by the much-anticipated return of Young Justice and a Harley Quinn animated series.
