Eleven Arts Bringing 'Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern' To US Cinemas

Eleven Arts Anime Studio have been responsible for the US release of several Japanese animated films, most recently the acclaimed A Silent Voice. The distributor has now announced that it will next bring the new two-part animated project Haikara-San to American audiences: starting with Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern Part One.

Haikara is a headstrong tomboy living in early 20th century Japan, who finds herself betrothed via arranged marriage to a handsome second lieutenant. The period romance is considered something of a classic of shojo comics, and ran in Shojo Friend from 1975-77. Previously adapted as an animated TV series and a live-action movie, the new animated adaptation will bring the story to a whole new audience.

Written and directed by Mobile Suit Gudma Unicorn's Kazuhiro Furuhashi, and featuring character designs from Terumi Nishii (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)  part one will hit screens on June 8, 2018.  Part two is scheduled for release later in the year. Both parts will screen in their original Japanese language version with subtitles.

During the Taisho era of 1918, 17-year-old Benio Hanamura thrives on bucking tradition. As a boisterous and quarrelsome tomboy, Miss Hanamura leads a life of kendo and tree-climbing adventure with her best friends Tamaki and Ranmaru. Benio determines to find love on her own, though her family has other plans. Benio will encounter tests of love, independence, and friendship during wartime.
