Netflix Orders First Adult Animated Feature From 'Archer' Producers
Netflix has found considerable success with animation, for both family and adult audiences thanks to series like Trollhunters, Voltron and Bojack Horseman. Last year they took a big move into animated features too, when they acquired the exclusive rights to The Little Prince. Now it seems that they're preparing to take the next natural step and will produce their first Netflix Original animated feature
In a surprising move, their first animated feature is going to be aimed at adult audience. America: The Motion Picture will be a fictionalised comedy take on early US History. Channing Tatum has signed on to voice the lead (George Washington, naturally).
The film will be directed by Matt Thompson, a producer on Archer and co-creator of Adult Swim shows Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo. Archer creator Adam Reed will also be serving as producer, alongside The Lego Movie's Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The script will be written by Dave Callaham- a writer who has not previously worked in animation but has worked on a number of produced screenplays including The Expendables.
Callaham is a bit of an unknown quantity here- his credits don't exactly fill you with confidence- but the rest of the team is undoubtedly impressive. To see a major player like Netflix support adult animated features is certainly a big win for the industry too.
No expected release date has been announced at this time.
