'Invader Zim' Returning as A TV Movie
Nickelodeon is continuing its strategy to revive their long-dormant properties. After confirming the resurrection of the Hey Arnold Jungle Movie, fans have speculated on what could be next. Rumours have been swirling for some time that Invader Zim could be the next Nick Toon to be given another shot. These rumours have been strenuously denied and shot down by Zim creator Jhonen Vasquez.
It seems that they were in fact true, however, as Nickelodeon has now officially announced that Invader Zim will indeed be returning- this time as a 90-minute TV movie.
The original series ran for just a single season back in 2001 but has maintained a loyal fan-base who have never given up hope of a continuation. It featured the titular extraterrestrial and his unsuccessful attempts to conquer the earth to win the favour of the rulers of his homeworld. The new film will continue Zim's story in some form.
Vasquez will be returning to lead the new movie (although not necessarily as director) that will also bring back the original voice cast including Richard Horvitz as Zim and Rosearik Rikki Simons as robotic sidekick GIR.
Nickelodeon Senior Vice-President of Animation Development and Production, Chris Vicardi said of the project "As a network that prides itself on a 25-year history of creating groundbreaking, hilarious animation for kids, Invader Zim is one of our great loves. It’s been so exciting to see its popularity grow over the last decade through social media, consumer products, and the Zim comic books".
No transmission date has been announced as yet, but a short video was released to accompany the announcement.
