'In This Corner Of The World' English Trailer Released.
In This Corner Of The World is a highly anticipated anime feature from Sunao Katabuchi,- director of Mai Mai Miracle and assistant director of Kiki's Delivery Service. Adapted from a manga by Fumiyo Kouno, it follows a young girl named Suzu in war-torn Japan, who moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband's family. The film has recently screened in Japan to considerable acclaim, and now UK company Animatsu (who obtained global rights to the film earlier this year) have released the first English trailer for the film.
On the strength of this trailer, this is looking to be rather special. The film is brought to life with beautiful pastel-style visuals, with sumptuous looking backgrounds. The trailer does an impressive job of contrasting the bucolic ideal of rural/small-town Japanese life and the harsh realities of war.
The subject matter will draw inevitable comparisons with films such as Grave Of Fireflies, Giovanni's Island and Barefoot Gen. Yet, while similarities do seem to exist, the distributors are keen to sell this as a "heart-warming" and "inspiring" tale. In other words, while this might not be all rainbows and flowers the whole way through, neither should you expect this to be a total downer.
The film will be released in Japan this October. International release dates have yet to be announced but we're expecting a 2017 release date for the UK at least. We'll keep you posted. Check out the trailer below!
