Netflix To Release 'The Little Prince' in the US.
Animation fans in the US were disappointed last week when it emerged that Paramount had shelved plans to release The Little Prince just days before it was to hit cinema screens. Director Mark Osborne ( who also directed Kung Fu Panda) announced on Twitter that another company had picked it up and it would see release later in the year. It has now been revealed who the mystery Knight in Shining Armour is who has swooped in and saved the Prince- and it's none other than Netflix.
This will do doubt be a bit disappointing to those who were hoping to see it on the big screen. But on the other hand, the film will possibly be even more widely seen this way and may find it easier to pick up an audience.
Osborne's film was originally released in France last summer, and it picked up a Cesar award for Best Animated Feature last month. It is based on the much-loved classic tale by Antoine de Saint-Exupery and uses a mix of CG and Stop-motion. It has been warmly received everywhere it has played so far and has already grossed more than $100 million.
The film is now playing in cinemas in Canada and will premiere on Netflix in the United States later this year, Based on the film's IMDB page it looks like the UK release has also been dropped, so we'll have to wait and see if Netflix will release it outside the US as well.
